๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Wash and Dry Produce
Rinse cucumber, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, and blueberries under cool running water. Pat them completely dry using a clean kitchen towel or paper towel so cuts are clean and toppings do not slide off.
- โข Produce skins are matte and free of water droplets on the cutting board.
- โข Leaving produce wet, which prevents spreads and toppings from adhering.
Spread the Base Canvas
Place a slice of whole grain bread or a round rice cake flat in the center of the plate. Use a butter knife to spread an even layer of hummus or cream cheese to the edges to serve as 'edible glue'.
- โข Even, opaque layer of spread covering the bread surface without tearing the crust.
- โข Spreading cold, hard cream cheese too aggressively and tearing the bread base.
Slice Main Feature Elements
Cut cucumber and hard-boiled egg into 1/4-inch round disks using a paring knife. Halve cherry tomatoes lengthwise and slice bell peppers into thin matchstick strips for whiskers or hair.
- โข Uniform circular rounds and thin strips neatly arranged along the board perimeter.
- โข Cutting slices too thick, causing them to roll off the plate.
Punch Decorative Accents
Press mini vegetable cutters firmly into bell pepper slabs and cucumber rounds to punch out star, flower, or heart shapes. Push the cut shapes gently out of the cutter mold onto a prep dish.
- โข Sharp-edged star and flower produce cutouts resting next to the cutter molds.
- โข Punching on curved, uneven skin surfaces which bends or jams the cutter.
Assemble the Character Face
Position two egg or cucumber rounds on the top half of the base for eyes, topping each with a blueberry for pupils. Place a cherry tomato half in the center for a nose and arrange bell pepper matchsticks radiating outward as whiskers.
- โข Recognizable animal or character face clearly centered and secured to the base spread.
- โข Placing facial features too close to the edges where they slide off.
Frame and Garnish the Plate
Arrange leftover cutout stars, cucumber crescents, and extra blueberries along the perimeter of the serving plate to create a colorful border. Check that all components are stable before presenting.
- โข Clean, colorful plate margin framed with evenly spaced fruit and vegetable accents.
- โข Overcrowding the plate rim, making the plate difficult to pick up.
